A Short Life Choice

Remember 2007 Brittany Spears? The breakdown. The shaved head. That’s me. Well, kinda. I didn’t shave it all off, but I went as close as I’ve ever gone. It happened because Southwest Florida is really freakin hot in the summer. It’s miserable-hot from April to November and less-miserable-hot from December through March.

A couple years ago I cut it pretty short, but got talked out of the full pixie cut I wanted. It ended up looking a little dreadful and weirdly bowl-like for a while. This time I went in to the salon armed with pictures and determination. It was overkill. Jessie, my stylist, was delighted to cut all my hair off. She chattered the entire time, which usually makes me nervous, but I was too focused on the piles of blonde hair that were starting to completely encircling us. I kept telling myself to breathe. It's just hair. It'll grow back. Maybe I can start a wig trend. Breathe. It's just hair.

And here’s the newest me! I love it. Absolutely love it. In fact, I think I might try one of the below pictures next time. My other plan, (and this is just an idea, I’m still a little scared about following through) is to let my roots grow out and in a couple hair cuts, I’ll know what my real hair color is again. I’ve been coloring it since I was 17, so it’s anyone’s guess what the color is and how much has turned gray. I’m thinking the gray is significant since Cayden and Ezra came long. Micah was a pretty good, if loud, kid. His younger brothers seem determined to fight over everything from which identical plate they use for dinner, to who can pour the most water out of the bathtub before mama gets mad. Speaking of the kids, they think I cut my hair all off so that I match the rest of my male household. Eyeroll.

Love Ginnifer's look!

Or maybe a grown up Hermione?

I like the gray-lavenderish color

But back to my hair. If I do end up coloring it, I’m still deciding on the shade. I’m considering a lavender, since the last time my hair was to dark to really appreciate the full purple-ness. Thoughts?

Glittery and Unicorn-ish Results

Well, I annoyed my husband again this weekend. It takes him a while to adjust to my hair color changes, and just as he got used to the blonde, i moved on to Rose Gold. It’s a misleading name, in my opinion. It looks more purplish/mauve than beautiful golden rose, but whatevs. It played well with my edgy trend experiment.

First was the glitter roots. I think we can all agree that was a tremendous success. I love it, honestly. Plus, beauty hack! Are your roots showing and your hair stylist can’t fit you in? No worries, just slather on hair gel, then sprinkle some glitter on those ugly dark roots and voila! It’s covered and you’ve got a great conversation starter. (Unless you’re like the good, reserved people of Ave Maria. Then, you’ll just get long stares but no comments. I paraded through Publix today and everyone politely acted like I hadn’t lost my mind. Disappointing really)

Moving on. Next was the unicorn eyes. Have I mentioned I have the artistic skill of a sugared-up three year old? I used black, teal, and purple eyeliner, and a couple gems. Meanwhile, the awesome gold eyeliner I specifically purchased for this project sat forgotten until I was already done. At that point, why mess with perfection?

Finally, lollipop lips. This one was ridiculous. It was basically putting on lipstick and gloss, then smearing it around outside your lips like you’re enjoying a lollipop. I could go another direction with that, but will refrain. Let’s just say it looked stupid and I give it a solid thumbs down.

Once my fabulous look was complete, I had to send a picture to Micah, who was at his dad’s for the weekend. I told him he could have had this Mom at his field trip. He wasn’t impressed.

My other sons were a little more accepting- Cayden said I looked pretty but crazy, and Ezra rubbed off some of my glitter and tried to put it on his own hair. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right?

Maybe this will be my Valentine’s Day going out look....

Happy Monday!!

Edgy (Weird) Beauty Trends

Remember the Christmas eyebrows I attempted during the holiday season? Yes, I know it was a complete fail, but it inspired me to look into more odd beauty trends. And I found a lot!

I've found my favorite three and will attempt to recreate them, in my own style. Which, of course, means I probably won't be anywhere near the original, because I have very little natural style talent.

1. Glitter Roots
Ummm, what's not to love? Hiding your roots with glitter and fairy dust, yes please! Not sure how that would work out in your sheets, though. I imagine it's impossible to get rid of. Hubby will not be pleased.

2. Unicorn Eyeliner
This one looks pretty difficult, and I have very low expectations for my reproduction capabilities, but it looks so cool! Not sure where one should go with eyes like that, but I'll probably end up at Publix where I'll run into Cayden's teacher who already knows about my Comic Con spandex Rogue costume.

3. Lollipop Lips
This one is right up my alley! I never put lipstick on without getting it everywhere. This trend Requires you to mess it up!

So my thought is by combining all three of these wonderful, edgy trends, I should easily be the coolest mom at the field trip on Wednesday. He thought I was embarrassing when I wore pajama pants to pick him up in first grade. Then, he gave me strict instructions to not call him anything but Micah at school- no Chompy, Boo Boo, Micah boo, Baby, or Little Man. What could go wrong here?

The Purple Hair Incident

I like to color my hair. My husband would probably say it's more of an obsession. The first time I went from drastically blonde to a very dark brunette, my son took one look at me, and started hysterically crying. He said I was not his mom and he wanted his real mom to come back. Not sure if it was traumatic for him, or he just got a touch of my dramatic side.

This is a fake smile- he was still mad at me so I bribed him by taking him mini-golfing.

Before I show you my newest unsuccessful results, I'm going to take you back in time. To 2002. I was young, dumb, and aiming to be a sexy red-head. Fail. I initially turned my hair bubble-gum pink and had to go to finals looking like a crayon. This not-much-better result was the last time I tried red for a good many years.

LOOK AT IT! Not just the hair color, but the style! What what I thinking???

Anyway, I got a pastel purple hair color a while ago and had been getting up the courage to use it. I forgot to take a picture of the box, but here's the googled version:

I'm not unrealistic; i knew my hair wouldn't turn out quite so magical, but the results were no where near even my least-magical thoughts. So here it is...

Rather anti-climatic, right? A couple notes about the photos. In the second picture, as I was taking a selfie, Micah can be seen climbing sideways across Cayden's car seat to retrieve a toy. He ended up getting stuck and fell out of the car onto the church parking lot. Graceful, just like his mama.

In the third picture, Ezra is proudly modeling his medal from the 5k we ran on Saturday morning. And by 'ran a 5k', I mean Chase pushed the stroller with the boys until the last 100 feet, at which time Ezra was screaming for me to hold him, and Cayden climbed out to make his running debut. Good times.

So tomorrow I have some very exciting news that I've been working on for over a month now. I'd really like some support on this- change isn't easy for me. Truthfully, I find it terrifying. But I'm putting on my big girl panties and taking a leap of faith!

Love, Susanne
